The Dutch Farms
Experience The Dutch Farms – a charming open-air museum where the whole family can explore the story of the Dutch farmers who settled on Amager. Discover historic farmhouses, animals, gardens and authentic experiences in peaceful rural surroundings close to Copenhagen.

The Story of the Dutch on Amager
The Dutch Farms invite you to explore Amager’s charming past and discover the story of how something foreign became truly Danish. Here, close to Copenhagen, you can unwind in peaceful countryside surroundings with crooked thatched roofs, friendly pigs to pet, and gardens made for play and relaxation. History tastes like traditional Danish red berry pudding with cream, and the atmosphere brings to life a village where people knew how to celebrate so well that even the king wanted to join in.
Bring the children to the museum
Slow down at The Dutch Farms while discovering everyday life in the old days. There is plenty of room for the whole family, and children can often follow a fun treasure hunt around the museum grounds.
Outside, you’ll find traditional games and six wooden horses ready for a stationary ride. Bring your own picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Throughout the year, special family-friendly activities and events focus on children’s experiences and storytelling.
And remember – children have free admission!
The story of the Dutch village – told where it began
The Dutch Farms are a cosy time capsule where peace, history and rural charm take centre stage. Wander through the old farmhouses and step into the world of the Amager farmers. Here you can experience both the past and present of Amager in beautiful surroundings.
The museum is located in Store Magleby, also known as “The Dutch Village”. In the 16th century, Dutch farmers settled on Amager and were granted special privileges by the Danish king. Their history, cultural heritage and local identity are at the heart of the museum experience.
Time stands still in the Dutch interiors
Start your visit with the exhibition 500 Years of Dutch History, where you can immerse yourself in the unique culture and traditions of the Amager farmers. They became famous for their exceptional vegetable farming and for selling produce at the markets in Copenhagen.
You can also admire the impressive traditional Amager costumes, created for every imaginable occasion and reflecting the prosperity of the farming community.
Step into the beautifully preserved living rooms of the farmers and enjoy the paintings of Julius Exner in the museum’s gallery.
The museum garden
The Dutch Farms feature a lovely kitchen garden where volunteers grow some of the vegetables once sold by the Dutch farmers in Copenhagen’s markets. In July, children can help with the harvest and experience the joy of getting their hands dirty while learning where food comes from.
In August and September, the garden bursts into colour as beautiful dahlias bloom in every shape and shade – many of them originally bred on Amager.
Meet the pigs and goats
Say hello to the museum’s pigs and goats, who are ready for cuddles throughout the summer season. The pigs roam around their large enclosure, where they love mud baths and belly scratches.
The goats stay in the paddock closest to the old farmhouse. In the past, goats were known as “the poor man’s cow” because they were inexpensive to keep and provided milk. Every other year, the goats have kids.
The Dutch Museum café
The cosy café at the Dutch Museum serves drinks, coffee and cake.
The café is located in the old barn of Nordgården, right between the ticket office and the museum shop.
Picnic areas
You are welcome to enjoy your packed lunch outdoors at the museum, where tables and benches are available. Relax in the rose garden or beneath the large walnut tree overlooking the pigs with their wagging tails.
The museum shop
The museum shop offers traditional toys, books, ceramics and charming souvenirs. You can also buy herb vinegar and seasoned salt made at the museum, as well as beer from Amager Bryghus. Take a bottle home – or enjoy a cold Dragør beer during your visit.
