Store Magleby Church
In the middle of Amager, in the heart of the village of Store Magleby, Store Magleby Church stands as a testament to both medieval building traditions and the unique Dutch cultural heritage that has characterised the area for more than 500 years.
Store Magleby Church is one of Dragør's most prominent landmarks and a place where history and local community come together. The church is located in the middle of the old village of Store Magleby, just a few kilometres from Dragør's idyllic harbour. The first church on the site was built around 1200 in Romanesque style, and although much has changed over the centuries, you can still see the oldest features in the building's structure. Traces of medieval craftsmanship are particularly evident in the masonry. The church has been expanded and adapted over time, so today you'll find a building that has both medieval details and Renaissance features.
The church is particularly known for its connection to the Dutch farmers whom Christian II invited to Amager in the early 1500s. They brought new farming methods with them and left their mark on the entire region. History still lives on in the church, where gravestones and old inscriptions bear witness to the first Dutch families. This makes the place an important part of both Denmark's and Amager's cultural heritage.
Inside, the church offers beautiful frescoes, a magnificent altar and an organ that is often used for concerts. Many locals use the church for services, weddings and holidays, but it is also open to guests who simply want to experience the atmosphere or enjoy the silence. For tourists, it offers an obvious opportunity to combine a walk through Dragør's cobbled streets with a visit to a living piece of Danish history.
Store Magleby Church is therefore more than just a building. It is a gathering place where the past and present meet, and where both local and international visitors can find reflection and inspiration.
